DayZ Developer Sees Standalone Free-To-Play Future

DayZ Developer Sees Standalone Free-To-Play Future

None

Perhaps more popular than the game for which it’s a mod, DayZ is a developer-produced, massive and unforgiving zombie survival simulator built on the ArmA II engine. It’s nearing 500,000 users, which is a big enough milestone that developer Dean “Rocket” Hall has provided some thoughts on the title’s future.

In a panel at PC and Indie game showcase Rezzed, Hall mentioned that he would like to see DayZ grow into a standalone thing, potentially free-to-play. Would it be supported by microtransactions? An in-game shop? Wouldn’t something like that cleave from the game’s premise as a hardcore, “realistic” zombie survival sim?

That’s all speculation, though, as the actual premise behind such a switch hasn’t yet been discussed publicly. We have only a throwaway comment from a gaming convention, though given the title’s popularity (it having burned out five servers), it seems fairly likely that DayZ’s grim brand of violence and terror has a bright future.
