DC Universe Consolidating Servers

DC Universe Consolidating Servers

None

A few days ago, DC Universe Online’s server count was at a whopping twenty-six. However, you might have noticed that that total is slowly declining. Sony Online Entertainment is currently in the middle of an effort to shrink down the number of DC Universe Online servers to four “megaservers.”

The consolidation will combine servers by region and platform. The European PC servers are being merged today, with U.S. PC servers being squished together on August 10th and US PS3 servers following a day later. The final consolidation effort will happen on August 15th, when all the PS3 servers in Europe are merged. Note that since all servers are becoming one according to region and platform, this opens up PVP and PVE play with anyone who is on your megaserver. It’s an unexpected community-building side effect for a move that is meant to help Sony manage their player base.

Unfortunately, there are some drawbacks to the consolidation, most notably in character names. Simply put, the chance of there being two characters named Steve on two separate serves that will be merged is rather high. Some of those Steves are going to have to change their names. Sony says that it has implemented forced name changes via “the fairest system possible,” and characters that do have to change their name will be able to choose a totally new name for free if they don’t like the one that Sony assigns them.
