DC Universe Online Opens Item Shop

DC Universe Online Opens Item Shop

None

In a move that echoes that of competitor Cryptic Studios’ Champions Online, Sony has added a cash shop to its DC-licensed, superhero action-MMO. As of now, the only items available therein are a Proto Repair-Bot, which repairs equipment in the field, and Vault Tickets, which allow players to visit the Vault beyond their standard once-per-day limit.

While cash shops have long been a staple of free-to-play Korean MMORPGs, they have only recently made the jump to titles from Western development studios. Cryptic Studio led the charge with in-game stores for both Champions Online and Star Trek Online, with Turbine following suit, bringing Dungeons & Dragons Online and Lord of the Rings Online into the free-to-play realm.

Could this be a hint that SOE is looking to bring the super-powered MMO into the free-to-play sphere? Unlikely, since a cash shop has been a noted prospect since day one. Regardless, it will be interesting to see if this hybrid model brings its purveyor a profit.
