You knew it was coming. Even if you weren’t actually aware of Cryptic’s intent to take its Star Trek MMO into the realm of free-to-play, odds were you had an inkling when the company first announced the free-to-play switchover for its superhero-themed MMO, Champions Online, that its other online juggernaut couldn’t be too far behind. The day has come. In a press release sent out today by Perfect World Entertainment, the free-to-play launch of Star Trek Online was made official. Players may now go where no man has gone before without the barriers to entry that may have held them back before, be those retail or subscription fees. As with Champions Online and most other free-to-play MMOs, Star Trek Online does tout additional features for the paying player, but these premium expenditures are ostensibly not required to experience the base gameplay.
