Diablo III Director Leaves Blizzard, Quits the Gaming Biz

Jay Wilson has been in gaming for a long time. Most of you probably know him the director for Diablo III , but before Jay started working at Blizzard in 2006 he worked at Relic, first as a design director for Company of Heroes , and then as the lead designer for Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War. That’s a pretty impressive resume if I do say so myself (and I do). I respect Wilson for his willingness to call out the real-money Auction House as being one of the biggest flaws in Diablo III as it shipped. The removal of the Auction House was the beginning of Diablo III ‘s revival, and for that I have so much gratitude for his input.

Wilson has spent enough time at Blizzard, and enough time in the video game industry in general, and he’s decided that now is the time to bow out and try something new. Posting on Twitter, Wilson stated, “I’m leaving to pursue my original passion, writing. It’s what I was doing when I fell into this job, and I’ve always wanted to return to it.” So there’s no bad blood here; Wilson has spent the rest of his day responding to well-wishers and praising his friends and co-workers at Blizzard. We wish him the best, and who knows? Maybe we’ll get some awesome fantasy novels out of it.
