Diablo III Excises Companion, Reforging Scrolls

None

The chic new thing for Diablo III seems to be removing features .

Understand, for Blizzard, the current Diablo III beta is about streamlining the experience, seeing what works and what doesn’t, what’s necessary and unnecessary. As such, when it was announced yesterday on the forums that Companion and Reforging Scrolls had been removed from the game, it came along with a brief explanation from Blizzard as to their motivation and reasoning:

“In both cases these are features we felt were underdeveloped and just not quite good enough for the game in their current state. The companion pets felt like they were mandatory to maximize play efficiency and some of the pets were too cutesy for the gritty, dark world of Sanctuary. Neither of those are issues we felt like we could solve without a lot of additional work, and we’re trying to close in on a solid release date for the game, not move further away. When weighing these systems against releasing the game, we decided to cut these scrolls and stay on track for the game’s release.”

The response on the forums seems to be one of general acceptance, particularly if it means keeping the game on track. That said, it doesn’t mean that these systems will be gone forever as, in the same post, Community Manager Nethaera expresses a desire to rework both the companion system and the reforging scrolls into cooler and more meaningful systems.
