Did Assassin’s Creed Plagiarize Its Plot?

Did Assassin’s Creed Plagiarize Its Plot?

None

Author and research engineer John Beiswenger published a sci-fi novel called Link back in 2002, which contained devices that were very similar to the Animus from the Assassin’s Creed series. These Link Devices allowed their users to go back in time and relive history through the eyes of their ancestors. A big part of Link ’s story involves using the link device to relive the lives and memories of assassins.

As you can imagine, Beiswenger wasn’t happy when he found out the plot of Assassin’s Creed is basically exactly the same as his novel. He has filed copyright infringement papers, which allegedly provide several examples of proof that the Assassin’s Creed storyline is far too similar to his own storyline.

Beiswenger seeks to halt any further infringement on his copyright and is demanding damages of up to $5.25 million. Should he succeed, this might spell the end for the Assassin’s Creed franchise. Then again, there aren’t very many truly original ideas out there anyway, and I’d personally rate his chances of succeeding at slim to none.
