Driver: San Francisco Requires An Internet Connection

Driver: San Francisco Requires An Internet Connection

None

Apparently Ubisoft is planning to re-implement an incredibly annoying security feature into their upcoming Driver: San Francisco title. Users are required to maintain a “permanent internet connection” while attempting to play Driver on their PCs.

The DRM also periodically checks to make sure that you are still connected. So, if your Internet connection drops out in the middle of gameplay, the game will pause itself until your connection comes back.

Ubisoft came under heavy criticism for implementing the always-on-Internet requirement in 2010. Last January, the developer succumbed to the critics by scaling back the DRM to only require players be connected upon launch. But apparently, they’ve had a change of heart.

Obviously, the piracy of PC titles has become a major concern for Ubisoft recently. The developer defended the move, saying “Bear in mind though that the PC version of DRVSF is released simultaneously to consoles.” Is it just me, or does this defense sound like they’re discouraging people from buying the PC title by making it less fun than the console version?

Driver: San Francisco will be available on September 6th.
