S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2’s “Always On” DRM

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2’s “Always On” DRM

The spectrum of DRM is vast and varied. There are instances of good low-impact DRM implementation, and instances of horrible high-impact impractical DRM. Most gamers agree that one of the worst implementations of DRM is the “always on internet connection,” which requires players to constantly be connected to the internet in order to play a game. This means the game can’t be played on the go on a gaming laptop and can’t be played at home when your internet goes out.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 is going to use this type of DRM in a slightly different way. Instead of requiring a constantly on internet connection to provide a DRM check, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 will serve you actual game content through the internet, such as “text information, code, and quests.” This does make the actual game install lighter, but it still means you must have an internet connection to play the game.

The story comes from an interview by DSO Gaming, a Russian site, with Sergey Grigorovich of GSC Game World. He even admitted that this was a measure implemented specifically to handle pirates. However, he did add that “If people cannot afford a licensed version, it is to our advantage if they download a pirated copy, and then want to buy a license. In Ukraine, there are different products that people love so much that they buy a license in principle. We want to create just such a product.”
