Epic: Infinity Blade “The Most Profitable Game We’ve Ever Made”

Speaking at the Game Developers Conference in Taipei yesterday, Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney said that their iOS title Infinity Blade is “the most profitable game we’ve ever made—in terms of man years invested versus revenue,” even more so than their better-known blockbuster series Gears of War.

Recently it was announced that Infinity Blade II made a little over $5 million in just its first month on the App Store, while the Infinity Blade series as a whole made over $30 million in the year following the launch of the series’ original entry.

The announcement came during a presentation on the future of free-to-play gaming. While many believe F2P titles are actively harming the industry, Sweeney sees them as a positive supplement to the larger gaming market. According to Sweeney, the present high-cost model of game development will be unable to sustain itself in the long run.

“Nowadays the high end of the game business is in these console game,” Sweeney said. “Activision invests almost $100 million per year in Call of Duty. And who can realistically afford to do that?”
