Europa Universalis IV Premise
Europa Universalis IV was originally developed based off of a French board game that carried the same name, created by Phillipe Thibault in 1993. The video game adaptation was created using a propriety software engine know as the “Europa Engine” and the game went gold on January 23, 2001.
To begin the game, the player takes control of one of seven European nations (with other countries available in different scenarios) between the years 1492 and 1801. The player’s goal is to expand their power through military might, diplomacy, and colonial wealth. The game’s map contains 3,633 provinces and the action continues along in a pausable, real-time development cycle.
At the beginning of play, the map is two dimensional and divided into two parts: provinces and sea zones. A section of the map is is unavailable to start play, but the player is permitted to explore individual provinces. Then, after choosing your European country to begin with, you begin to represent the corresponding historical ruler for your country.
The game features a number of playable, historical events. These include, but are not limited to, The Treaty of Tordesillas and the Reformation. In the game, you control your country’s budget and can allocate funds to whichever realm of government you deem fit. This includes, defense, research, treasuries, and more.
There are four different types of technology that can be increased and earned during the game: army, navy, infrastructure, and trade. As you progress, you earn new capabilities. As a leader of a nation, one of your biggest concerns should be a rebellion of the population, these are caused by discrepancies between the state and the religion followed in a province, taxation issues, or other events that occur throughout gameplay. Groups of rebels can also arise and affect gameplay, with attempts to secede or declare independence.
One of the most valuable aspects of the game involves uninhabited territories, which can be explored using conquistadors and explorers that your country has at its disposal.
