Frostbite 2 Was Initially Made For Next-Gen Consoles

EA has said Frostbite 2, the engine created and used by DICE for Battlefield 3, was originally intended to be technology for the next generation of consoles.

“Yeah, I’ll be honest with you – Frostbite 2 was built for the next generation,” head of the EA Games label Patrick Soderlund told Gamasutra. “That’s how we started it. We had that in mind and we said, ‘We’re going to have to build something that can scale.’”

He added that the impressive visual attributes and physics Battlefield 3 boasts is just the beginning as far as the capabilities of Frostbite 2 goes.

“It doesn’t mean that what you see in Battlefield 3 is the end state. That’s the beginning; that’s where we start and then we go forward. But we have a tech base that makes me feel really confident in how we’re positioned for what’s going to come in the future.”

In addition to Battlefield 3, Frostbite 2 has also been utilized by Need for Speed: The Run, while future titles to make use of the technology includes Medal of Honor: Warfighter and Command & Conquer: Generals 2.
