FTC Approves Microsoft Skype Deal

FTC Approves Microsoft Skype Deal

None

In May, Microsoft announced that it would be acquiring Skype, the free VoIP service, for $8.5 billion dollars. As part of the announcement, Microsoft said that they would be including Skype support for the Xbox 360, the Kinect platform, and many other Microsoft devices. Microsoft needed to receive antitrust approval from the Federal Trade Commission to make this purchase, and as of today the FTC announced that the approval has been granted. The deal will be completed soon, and it’s just a matter of time before Xbox Skype will be on our dashboards.

What does this mean for Skype on other platforms? Many of you know that Sky is supported on the PSP. Well, last month Microsoft released a statement that said “Microsoft will continue to invest in and support Skype clients on non-Microsoft platforms.” So no need to worry, your PSP will continue to Skype away. The PlayStation Vita, on the other hand, is another story. There is no official word on whether or not the Vita will include Skype support, though there’s been rumors suggesting it would. It looks like we’ll just have to wait and see.
