GameStop Testing An On-Demand Streaming Service For Consoles

None

GameStop has been around for almost 30 years, and has been consistently announcing record earnings since their inception, almost. Last quarter, the retailer’s revenue dropped by almost ten million dollars. However, GameStop aims to turn those numbers around by shifting their focus a bit. Last March, GameStop acquired Spawn Labs and an online storefront called Impulse. Obviously, GameStop is known for their retail locations, so this push into the digital realm marks a distinctive priority shift.

Well, today GameStop announced that they have been testing a system that would bring an on-demand gaming system to Xbox 360 and PS3 in July.

“Spawn recently began its first beta and is currently live, testing the streaming of Xbox 360, PS3, and PC games from a data center in Austin, Texas,” said Tony Bartel, GameStop’s president. “The initial results of the test are positive, and we are on track to broaden our testing in Q4 to a national beta and for a nationwide launch in the first half of 2012. We continue to get positive feedback from our publishing partners about the pro-console, low investment model that we have chosen.”

The beta is currently closed, but Bartel insists that open beta will begin next year.
