GDC 2011: NGP Data Storage Detailed

None

We learned during the big NGP reveal several months ago that the NGP was ditching the UMD format for card-based memory, but we didn’t know much about the particulars until today. Games formatted for the NGP will ship on either 2GB or 4GB cards, and there will be a certain amount of free space left on every card for online patches, game saves, and DLC.

Because the NGP will not have onboard memory, however, an auxiliary memory solution is also part of the memory scheme, with specialty cards of varying storage sizes (no specifics were given) so users can download full games and media content from the PlayStation Network. It was not said whether these cards would be formatted the same way as the game cards.
