Gearbox: Brothers in Arms: Furious 4 “Still Evolving”

Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford has confirmed that the next installment in the Brother in Arms series, Furious 4, is still in development.

Speaking to CVG, Pitchford dispelled previous rumors of the game’s cancellation, saying that development is “going great,” but that the title has “evolved” since it was last seen at E3 last year.

“The game has evolved, I think people are going to be surprised by what they’ll see, and it’s still evolving,” Pitchford said. “One of the reasons why we’re not talking about it now is that it’s evolving and we need to make further changes before we can start talking about it.”

With Gearbox giving this fall’s Borderlands 2 and next spring’s Aliens: Colonial Marines first priority, Pitchford said that Furious 4 will not meet the late 2012 release date it was initially given.

When we first got a look at it, Brothers in Arms: Furious 4 was said to be a zany, co-op focused shooter with a style reminiscent of a cartoonish Inglourious Basterds . Longtime series fans were largely displeased with the new shift in tone, but whether or not their voices were heard in the process of Furious 4’s “evolution” will apparently have to wait until Gearbox is ready to share more details.

As for when that will be, Pitchford said, “I might come around to talk about Furious 4 between the releases of Borderlands 2 and Aliens: Colonial Marines, but certainly I won’t before the release of Borderlands 2.”
