How Star Trek Predicted the Future of Gaming

How Star Trek Predicted the Future of Gaming

If you’ve seen re-runs of Star Trek: The Next Generation then you know they had some pretty sweet tech on their updated version of the Enterprise. But who knew it was a giant floating magic-8 ball?

Jade Raymond (who is managing director at Ubisoft Toronto) touts how the show may have been right on the money where the future of gaming was concerned. “We are constantly challenged by new technology, and we’re always looking to think of new ways to surprise players. I’ve always believed that one day games would be more immersive than Star Trek’s Holodeck. I got into the game industry because I have a lot of questions, and I honestly do believe that games can help up answer some of them.” she touts.

While new advancements such as the Oculus Rift (and even the red headed step-child of the Kinect) are just the opening volleys in exploring new frontiers of our own, where will we ultimately end up? Raymond paints a very singularity-esque picture, stating, “There are a lot of really exciting things going on, and I think we’re on the cusp of a major innovation in games. Ultimately, all of these connections we have as humans are actually becoming a real thing, and the hive mind is becoming a reality. Add games to that, and it’s a truly new way to comprehend and share those concepts.”
