Is A Grand Theft Auto MMO In The Cards?

Rockstar North head and Grand Theft Auto series producer Leslie Benzies recently had a chat with Digital Trends . In the interview, there was a pretty interesting comment that came from Benzies. When asked if the series was planning to return to Vice City he said ”Of course at some point we would like to have one big world containing all our cities and let the player fly between them and revisit their favorite areas, and in that context reimagining Vice City would be very interesting.”

With the report that Grand Theft Auto V will be absolutely gigantic, one has to wonder if it’s even possible to create a traditional game big enough to contain San Andreas, Liberty City, and Vice City. The transition from single player campaign to MMO would be pretty seamless. Missions already play out in a similar manner: drive to quest giver, get quest, do quest, return to quest giver.

Does this mean that we’ll be playing Grand Theft Auto in a persistent online world in the near future? It’s honestly hard to say, but it’s equally hard to imagine a single player campaign that takes place in a world where all three cities are connected.

Regardless, it’ll probably be a long time before we see a follow up to Grand Theft Auto V. This is Rockstar, after all.
