Japanese Console Gaming Market Slides over 15%

Japanese Console Gaming Market Slides over 15%

None

Japan’s video gaming market slid in 2008 some 15.3% compared to 2007 figures according to Enterbrain. The industry brought in a bit more than $6.25 billion dollars.

According to Enterbrain, the decline in the market is most likely attributed to a lack of new console launches as opposed to the waning global economy. In 2007, the market was greatly bolstered by the late Q4 2006 launch of the PS3 and Nintendo Wii; the effect of which was felt throughout 2007. However, this theory fails to accurately explain the 7.9% drop in software sales.

In 2008:

  • Nintendo sold 2.91 million Wii and 4.03 million DS systems in Japan.
  • Sony sold 991,000 PS3s, and 3.54 million PSPs.
  • Microsoft sold 318,000 360s
