Telling Console Sales Figures in Japan

Telling Console Sales Figures in Japan

None

There looks to be a battle brewing in Japan and it doesn’t include Godzilla, Mothra or Microsoft. According to Media Create, the PSP actually outsold the Nintendo DS in Japan for the week ending February 24. The sales figures were very close, but the PSP edged out the DS with 53,373 to 50,151 units sold. We’ll see if this trend continues or not, but certainly the redesigned PSP looks to be a more viable handheld option than it was before.

The news isn’t all rosy for Sony, however. According to Reuters via Enterbrain, the Nintendo Wii outsold the PlayStation 3 by nearly 4 to 1 in the four weeks ending on February 24. Nintendo sold 331,627 units of the Wii, compared with 89,131 units of the PS3.

Nintendo’s Super Smash Bros. Brawl became the best-selling software for the month in Japan, with 1.33 million units sold, and followed by Wii Fit, which sold 309,311 units in the four previous sales weeks. It looks like quality software really can drive console sales.
