Jim Shepard: From The Old Republic To Dungeonmans

Jim Shepard: From The Old Republic To Dungeonmans

Where does one go after working on a AAA MMO seated in perhaps the most distinctive science fiction property of all time? To a top-down roguelike, of course!

Jim Shepard, whose past work includes BioWare’s Star Wars: The Old Republic, is hard at work on his next effort: a roguelike called Dungeonmans. The focus this time out isn’t on tremendous scale and stellar storytelling, but on a progressive twist on the standard roguelike formula. Rather than losing all of one’s progress automatically upon death, as is the standard, certain accomplishments will result in additions to the “Dungeonmans Academy,” which will allow future heroes to kick off their game with a bit of a head start.

We’ve seen something like this in the recently released Rogue Legacy, which saw players constructing a tower with gold they’d obtained during play, increasing their avatar’s base abilities. Dungeonmans, though, fits its progression system onto a more traditional framework, rather than couching it in side-scrolling action-platforming. The “Summer Preview” is out now, so you can try the title for yourself, in its current state.
