King Pong Ready – Like Pong Only Bigger!*

King Pong Ready – Like Pong Only Bigger!*

None

This could be the final attempt to emulate the world’s first mass-marketed video game, Pong. King Pong is a game that is going to be hard, if not impossible to follow. It will certainly live up to its name.

King Pong is live-action game based on the classic Pong, a virtual ping pong game. Although similar and similarly simple in concept, the mechanics behind the game are unlike anything that’s ever been attempted, and there’s nothing simple about it.

King Pong is played outdoors. The playfield is one-square mile, and it’s flat. Vehicles are driven up and down the sides of the playfield, and act as paddles. The ball is an eight-foot diameter beam of light generated by a hovering helicopter, equipped with specialized software to broadcast and receive information to and from the paddle vehicles. A HUD is projected on the windshield of each vehicle giving the player an overhead view of the game in progress. This will help them determine where to drive the vehicle to intercept and deflect the ball. Creators of the game claim that it’s safe, fun and unlike anything on the market making it perfect for birthdays, conventions, contests and any special occasion.

“King Pong, the monster of all games, will be available in all major markets by early next spring,” exclaims co-creator Tim Timinny. “As long as the city has a helicopter and a pilot King Pong will be there, as we are just in the process of licensing and training franchisees. The game is played out of town on grid roads, typically a half-hour ride into the country. These farming roads are completely straight. We secure the roads by obtaining a permit from the municipality and are able to restrict traffic in the area. The helicopter beams a visible, blue light onto the ground. It’s not affected by trees, hills, barns or other obstacles. It can only be affected by one of the vehicles at either end of the field,” Timinny explains.

Vehicles are equipped with an eight-foot sensor used to deflect the ball, therefore the size of the vehicle doesn’t matter. What does matter is speed and driving skills. Timinny says that the vehicles are the responsibility of the players and not of the company. That way players can trick out their vehicles to accommodate the game, whether increasing speed, traction, steering response, braking or any combination. Timinny says players can use an assortment of vehicles strictly for novelty such as dirt bikes, tractors, snowmobiles, school busses or semi trailers.

King Pong is an expensive undertaking, and as such Timinny says that there will be a five-hour minimum per day, so he advises interested players to share the expense with other enthusiasts. He claims that at $200 per half-hour game, per person, is worth the expense simply because there’s nothing else like it in the world.

“Just play King Pong once and you’ll get addicted to it in a big, big way,” grins Timinny.
