Kingdoms of Amalur 2, The Game That Could’ve Been

Kingdoms of Amalur 2, The Game That Could’ve Been

None

Big Huge Games has apparently revealed that a sequel to Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning was in pre-production before the closure of developer 38 Studios.

An anonymous tipster told Joystiq that the sequel could have featured no loading times, graphical enhancements, expanded and improved combat animations, less branching quests, and a superior effect on the world by players. Said elements were being tested by 38 Studios before their eventual demise, leading to the cancellation of the project.

Publisher Electronic Arts didn’t want to back the sequel, but Big Huge Games showcased the title to several parties. Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning itself beat EA’s commercial expectations with the action role-playing game shipping 1.2 million units.

However, despite its positive sales performance, 38 Studios owed $112.6 million to the State of Rhode Island due to the several bonds they received when they moved to the region. That amount will now be paid by the state’s taxpayers and, as previously expected, the Kingdoms of Amalur IP is now likely to be transferred to Rhode Island itself.
