Konami Discourages Maternity Leave; Gets Sued

Konami Discourages Maternity Leave; Gets Sued

None

Apparently, if you’re a woman who works for Konami, getting pregnant might be hazardous to your job’s health.

Japanese law allows new mothers to take 14 weeks of paid maternity leave and up to one year of unpaid leave. So you can imagine Yoko Sekiguchi’s surprise when she returned to Konami after delivering a child and taking six months off to find that she had been demoted and had her salary cut.

“This is discrimination aimed at female employees who chose to take maternity leave,” said Sekiguchi when she filed the lawsuit two years ago. “I decided to take legal action because fellow female employees are experiencing the same type of treatment.”

According to Konami, they made the decision to demote Sekiguchi because her pregnancy was a “burden” for the company. Real classy, Konami.

The Tokyo High Court obviously didn’t agree with the developer’s actions because they have awarded Sekiguchi ¥950,000 ($12,000) in damages. This sum is only a fraction of the ¥33 million yen ($422,000) that the new mother was seeking, but it’s an emblematic victory, nonetheless.

“I want the company to be a place where people don’t have to chose between two alternatives: career or kids,” Sekiguchi told reporters.

Hey Konami, why do you hate babies so much?
