When we see videogame companies reserving a bunch of domain names, it’s usually evidence that a new game is being made. The reason why companies do this and why leaks like this are rarely wrong is because if they don’t act early and register all the appropriate domains relating to their new game or console, someone else might. This is exactly what is happening to Microsoft with the Xbox One.
It turns out that Microsoft doesn’t actually hold the rights to XboxOne.com or XboxOne.net. Someone in the UK holds the rights to those sites. Though, we’re not exactly sure who it is. Microsoft has filed a complaint with the National Arbitration Forum in the hopes that it will be able to secure control over the domains. However, the owner hasn’t done anything wrong with the domains so it is unlikely that they can exercise any legal power over him.
Microsoft also registered a number of other domain names, referencing things such as the Xbox Fusion, which lead several people to incorrectly guesses the name of their new console. It is currently unclear whether or not these domains actually refer to a new Xbox product or whether they were simply trial names for the Xbox One. It’s also possible that they were diversions meant to keep us from discovering the Xbox One’s actual name. More information on these potential Microsoft properties should be revealed come E3 this year.
