Minecraft, Rift, And EverQuest Bring Home GDC Awards

None

The already self-important Minecraft fan base has yet another reason to puff out their chests; the game took home a top award at the second annual GDC Awards Wednesday night. Trion Worlds’ Rift also snagged some prestigious awards.

About these awards, a spokesperson said, “Trion Worlds’ 2011 entrant Rift was honored with the top award as Best New Online Game, following its successful launch earlier this year; the title also took home the award for Best Online Technology. In addition, breakout sandbox building game Minecraft, by Mojang, won the prestigious Best Live Game award, along with the award for Best Community Relations.”

EverQuest was also inducted into the Game Developers Choice Online Awards Hall of Fame. During his acceptance speech, John Smedley, President of Sony Online Entertainment had this to say:

“When we set out to create EverQuest, many felt it was an unattainable stretch of the imagination. As it turns out, EverQuest exceeded even our wildest expectations. Twelve years later, we are about to release its 18th expansion, and have big plans for its future. We are incredibly proud of its impact on the industry and the community we have built. Tonight’s honor is a testament to the hard working individuals who have contributed to EverQuest – both past and present.”

EverQuest’s 18th (yes 18th) overall expansion, Veil of Alaris, is set to launch later this year.
