The fact that EverQuest, one of the earliest examples of what would become the MMO genre, still chugs along today is quite a feat. The MMO landscape is a volatile one, with even later successes, such as City of Heroes, are shutting down in the wake of diminishing returns, or going free-to-play in a last-ditch effort to attract and maintain a player-base.
And yet, today, EverQuest’s 19 th expansion hits the almost-fifteen-year-old MMO.
EverQuest: Rain of Fear introduces new rewards, new zones, more malleable “non-visible” armor, items specific to each class’ stats, and an “aggro meter,” which finally provides a numerical guide by which to manage tanking. Perhaps most telling, however, is that Rain of Fear raises the level cap from 95 to the long-awaited 100. It took fourteen years to get there, but, finally, your character can possess a three-digit level. Don’t you feel proud?
