SOEmote Goes Live

SOEmote Goes Live

None

SOEmote is the pithily titled update to EverQuest II that introduces facial morphing and voice modulation to the aging MMO, courtesy of one’s headset and webcam. For those who desire their Froglok to mimic their facial expressions, and for their voice to sound appropriately throaty, the technology should provide an easy, official avenue.

Made most famous by its overly enthusiastic marketing video, starring David Georgeson of SOE, the technology is live as of today, attached for free to the existing EverQuest II client.

The purpose behind it is to, ostensibly, enhance one’s role-playing experience, and pull one deeper into the game. Does it work? At E3, we were able to see Georgeson demonstrating the face-capturing technology, which uses a standard webcam with specialized software to paint virtual motion-capture points on one’s face, then track them in real-time and mimic them appropriately. It’s a neat little trick, and a unique addition in a market space dominated by high-level content and PvP-focused additions to aging games.
