New Destiny Level Boosters Aren’t Exactly “Micro” Transactions

Ever since the unveiling of the newly imagined Eververse Trading Company, Bungie has insisted that microtransactions in Destiny would remain strictly cosmetic. Apparently the sale of in-game currency (known as silver) has gone swimmingly and plans have changed. As of today you can purchase character boosters for a whopping $30 from the PSN Store or Xbox Store. The booster will instantly upgrade your new character to level 25 and give them a subclass boost, along with some “Telemetries” to upgrade weapons quicker.

I’m pretty confused about all of this. The legendary edition of The Taken King came with an identical booster, and I’m guessing that Bungie tracked how widely these were used and concluded that newcomers to the game would like to have the option to boost all of their new characters to eliminate the grind from 1-25. That initial grind, though, goes by really quickly, and even though the vanilla story kind of sucks, that’s the only way you’re going to experience it. Plus, beating the base game awards you one of the best PvP Pulse Rifles: “The Stranger’s Rifle.” If you really can’t be bothered to hit 25 on your own time, Destiny might not be the game for you. Spoiler: once you hit 40, the whole game becomes a grind for better loot as you level up ranks and run raids. Enjoy the story missions while you can, people.
