Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch is an action role-playing game developed by Level-5. The game was originally released in November 2011 in Japan and it’s an “enhanced” version of Ni no Kuni: Dominion of the Dark Djinn. Ni no Kuni: Dominion of the Dark Djinn was released for the Nintendo DS, but Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch debuted on the PlayStation 3. In January 2013, Bandai Namco Games published the game for a Western release. In 2019, a version of the game was released for the Nintendo Switch.
A remastered version of Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch hit the PlayStation 4 store in September 2019. The game is also available for Windows. In 2022, the remaster came to Xbox as well. What really makes the game stand out is the art style. All of the animated sequences were done by the infamous Studio Ghibli, a Japanese animation studio known for anime masterpieces like Howl’s Moving Castle, Kiki’s Delivery Service, and Spirited Away. The game also features music from Joe Hisaishi, a famous Japanese composer who has worked on over 100 scores and albums over the course of his career.
Playing Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch is like entering a Studio Ghibli anime and it’s as beautiful as it is charming. The game has glowing reviews with Steam awarding it a 9 out of 10 and IGN rating it an incredible 9.4 out of 10. Over 90% of Google users claim to like the game and it’s littered with glowing reviews. Almost every gamer who touches Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch falls in love with the game.
Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch Premise
Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch isn’t officially called a “remake”, but it is a heightened version of the 2010 game Ni no Kuni: Dominion of the Dark Djinn. The game’s popularity eventually led to a Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch remaster in 2019. This game is an action role-playing game that puts the player in a third-person perspective, so they can see more of what’s happening than a first-person perspective. The game’s main story is told through linear quests, but it also features open-world exploration outside of the main story.
Players follow Oliver, a young boy who wants to bring his mother back to life. At the beginning of the game, Oliver almost drowns, but he’s saved by his mother, Allie. After saving her son, Allie dies of heart problems. Oliver’s doll, a gift from his mother, reveals that it is actually a fairy named Drippy. Drippy tells Oliver about the world it’s from and expresses that this other world is controlled by an evil wizard. It also tells Oliver that its world has a “soulmate” for every person in Oliver’s world.
Oliver is convinced Drippy’s world is the answer to bringing his mother back to life. If he can save his mother’s “soulmate”, maybe it will bring his mother back as well. Oliver sets out on a grand quest to Drippy’s world in search of Alicia, his mother’s “soulmate”. Alicia also happens to be a great sage taken captive by the evil wizard, Shadar.
Oliver can travel between his home in Motorville and Drippy’s world. During his journey, he can explore towns, villages, dungeons, and many other locations in search of Alicia. Throughout Oliver’s travels, he uncovers more stones than he’s prepared for. Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch has twists around every corner.

Players assume the role of Oliver, the main protagonist. He travels with Drippy, the fairy who was once his doll, making these two integral parts of the game. While the game focuses on Oliver and Drippy’s quest, there are many characters in Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch. Many of these major and minor characters help flesh out the world. Oliver meets many people throughout his journey, but there are several main characters the game wouldn’t be the same without.
- Oliver: Oliver is the playable character and main protagonist of Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch. After nearly drowning, Oliver loses his mother, Allie. After Allie’s death, Oliver cries into a stuffed toy his mother made for him. Oliver has a sweet and kind face with a personality to match. He loves helping people and won’t say no to a request. His kind-hearted nature and youth make him gullible and easily manipulatable, but he’s a brave young boy who doesn’t back down from anything he’s set his mind to.
- Drippy: Drippy is Oliver’s fairy companion. Originally, Drippy was disguised as one of Oliver’s toys, but when Oliver’s mother died, Oliver’s tears brought Drippy to life. According to Drippy, he is the Lord High Lord of the Fairies and the evil wizard Shadar banished him to Motorville. Drippy was a comedian at one point, which gave Drippy a love for attention. The fairy is intelligent and he’s a loyal creature by nature.
- Allie: Allie is Oliver’s mother and she’s described as being in poor health. She dies of heart problems shortly after saving her son from drowning. Drippy convinces Oliver that Allie has a connection to the great sage Alicia from his home. Oliver’s belief in saving Alicia and resurrecting his mother is what sets Oliver off on his journey in the first place. Allie and Alicia’s connection goes much deeper than Drippy first suggests, but to reveal the truth would be a major spoiler.
- Shadar: Shadar is the evil wizard that Drippy tells Oliver about early on in the game. At first, the game sets Shadar up to be the main antagonist, but he’s actually the secondary antagonist. Shadar also goes by the Executor and the Dark Djinn. Shadar can interfere with other people’s hearts in many ways and his corruption leaves people as hollow shells, twists their beliefs, or even kill them. Shadar was once a magician named Lucien, but after facing many hardships, he fell into corruption. Seeing no way back to his past self, Shadar has embraced his place in the world as the Executor.
- The White Witch (Cassiopeia): The White Witch’s real name is Cassiopeia and she is the main antagonist of Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch. The White Witch wasn’t always evil. After the death of her father, the Wizard King, the council ran her country into the ground. As a teenager, Cassiopeia cast Ashes of Resurrection, a forbidden spell that she believed would make things better for her people. Instead, it caused an apocalypse and turned her people into monsters. With her kingdom destroyed by her own hand, Cassiopeia lives in isolation and hopeless. She creates the White Witch persona to protect herself. As the White Witch, she loses faith in the world and comes to believe it’s beyond saving.

Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch is a long game. In addition to the main quests, players have free reign to explore the vast reaches of the open world map, which will take Oliver through different areas. Exploring the world grants side stories, Easter eggs, and much more. While the exploration makes the experience rewarding, navigating the game to find every collectible and fight every enemy might feel overwhelming to some players.
Unfortunately, Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch doesn’t have any cheat codes to make the game easier. The original version of this game did have a few exploits that could help players cheat certain encounters. For example, some players claim that if the player sets the dialogue speed to slow, Oliver can cast spells while the dialogue is still going. The characters won’t be able to move until the dialogue concludes, giving Oliver the upper hand. There are a few tips and tricks like this. Unfortunately, they don’t seem to apply to the remastered version. These exploits mostly seem to occur on the PlayStation 3 original Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch.
Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch Remastered does have a number of achievements that players can work towards, though. While they may not be able to use cheats to enhance their gameplay, the game still offers plenty of incentive to keep going.

Who is the secret boss in Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch?
The final boss of Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch is the Guardians of the World. Players need to complete all Errand 131 bounties (Bounty Hunts 116-130) before they can face the Guardians of the World. Players can fight the Guardians of the World multiple times after their initial defeat. Their HP and attack power will increase, but fighting them multiple times is a great way to grind for rare resources like Kaleidostones and Scrolls of Truth.
What are the strongest familiars in Ni no Kuni?
Familiars are creatures that can help the player in battle. Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch has a lot of familiars to choose from, so it’s not always easy to pick the best ones. Keep in mind that not every familiar will work with every player’s preferred gameplay style. Some of the best familiars to recruit include:
- Napcaps – If players level up their Napcaps to their final form, Nightcap, they become one of the best healers in the game.
- Toko – Toko is another powerful healer, but it takes a lot of work to recruit and train these little guys. Toko has a tiny recruitment rate, runs away often, and takes forever to level up. If the player manages to do all of that, they’ll have a cracked healer familiar with their team.
- Lumberwood – Lumberwood is a great tank support for Esther. With the right combination of Lumberwood and defense, Esther is practically immortal.
- Sillymander – Sillymander is a great combination of speed and power. Not only is it the fastest familiar in Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch, but it can also pack a punch.
- Oroboros – Oroboros is a powerful magical familiar that players can build as a hard-hitting spellcaster or a healer.
What is Al Khemi weak to?
Al Khemi (a.k.a Genie of the Cauldron) is a boss found in the Summerlands. Players will need to defeat the Genie in order to unlock the alchemy cauldron. Unfortunately, Al Khemi has no elemental weaknesses, but it is resistant to water.
Can you fast-travel in Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch?
Eventually, the player unlocks a fast-travel spell. This spell takes a while to unlock. Until the player obtains this spell, they will have to manually move through the world.
