Ninja Theory Dispels Onimusha Rumors

Ninja Theory Dispels Onimusha Rumors

Last week, a rumor cropped up that Ninja Theory, the developer behind Heavenly Sword and Enslaved, had petitioned Capcom to create a next-gen entry in the Onimusha franchise. Onimusha, which hasn’t had a main series entry since the PlayStation 2’s Dawn of Dreams, fused the survival horror sensibilities of the Resident Evil series with feudal Japanese history and melee combat. A glitch in the original was, even more appropriately, the impetus for the juggling mechanics that played such a large part in Devil May Cry’s combat system.

Given that Ninja Theory has been tapped by Capcom to create a Devil May Cry reboot, it seems appropriate that they’d also want to helm a new Onimusha game.

According to their Twitter, however, this is simply false. “We are not working on an Onimusha game,” reads the @NinjaTheory tweet. “Any rumours surrounding this are untrue.”

It may not be happening at this instant, but, given the somewhat more staid and serious nature of the Onimusha franchise, as opposed to the over-the-top, punk-rock-and-metal style of Devil May Cry, the franchise would likely be a terrific fit for Ninja Theory.
