Nintendo Announces Metroid New 3DS XL

Nintendo Announces Metroid New 3DS XL

In a little over a month, the Metroid series is making its return with Samus Returns , a remake of the Game Boy classic, Metroid II: Return of Samus . Today, Nintendo announced a surprise celebratory SKU of its New 3DS XL platform. Who wants a new system?

On September 15, also the release date of Metroid: Samus Returns , the Metroid -branded Samus Edition New 3DS XL will drop. It will cost $199.99. The unit is colored just like Samus, with the top half of the shell red and the bottom yellow. The Screw Attack logo is on the bottom, while a stencil image of Samus herself sits on top.

Those hoping to snag both on launch may be disappointed to know that this is not a bundle. Metroid: Samus Returns and the Samus Edition New 3DS XL will have to be purchased separately. Nintendo is generally picky about which 3DS units come with bundled games, so this probably shouldn’t come as a surprise. Metroid fans have been clamoring for new games for years despite lower sales, so this may be a “put up or shut up” moment for the fanbase, as far as Nintendo’s perspective is concerned.

Nintendo also recently clarified the amiibo unlocks in Metroid: Samus Returns. It notes that the “hard” mode is something that comes with the game, while “Fusion Mode” is tied to the new amiibo figures.
