Nintendo Files Saddle Patent

Nintendo Files Saddle Patent

None

Just when you thought motion controls couldn’t get any more entrenched at Nintendo, they go and patent a saddle peripheral that looks strikingly similar to a Bosu balance ball. The saddle will allow gamers to house their Wii Remote and maintain access to the Nunchuk in order to simulate riding horses, camels, dragons, bulls, motorcycles, jet skis, etc.

The only downside to this setup is that the peripheral will obviously not have its own motion-detecting capabilities, relying on the Wii Remote to do the dirty work. This will likely limit the kind of experiences you can have while mounted on the saddle.

For instance, we’d love to explore Zelda’s Hyrule on horseback, but not being able to fire off an arrow, swing the Master Sword, or throw a boomerang a la Wii Sports Resort while mounted on the virtual nag would be a real shame.

Below you’ll find exemplar text from the patent filing as well as pictures that were picked up by Siliconera:

For example, the Wii main unit can display the back of a horse’s head and background of a trail, a field, a battlefield or other environment the virtual horse is being ridden through (see Figure 1A). The image may change in response to detected motion of the user.
