Nintendo Responds to Claims That It’s Ending Wii U Production This Year

The Nikkei is a stock market index, like the Dow Jones. It’s also the largest financial publication in Japan. According a recent article published on Nikkei’s Japanese website, Nintendo is to stop producing the Wii U console by the end of the year. This is, allegedly, due to poor sales and to make way for the NX which is soon to be revealed. This report made headlines yesterday because, generally, Nikkei is a reliable source and this would be big news. Nintendo has responded to the article (which it rarely ever does) to downplay the claim that it will soon be ceasing production of the Wii U.

I say downplay, and not refute, because Nintendo used rather ambiguous language in its response. “This isn’t an announcement from our company,” says a Nintendo spokesperson. “From the next quarter and thereafter as well, production is scheduled to continue.” While this indicates that an end to Wii U production isn’t imminent, it doesn’t deny that production could halt by year’s end. All we know for sure is that Nintendo will keep cranking out the Wii U through summer.
