Nintendo Switch Melting Some MicroSD cards

Nintendo Switch Melting Some MicroSD cards

The Nintendo community was in a bit of a tizzy recently over a melting microSD card. In a bit of not-so-surprising news, the story had nothing to do with Nintendo and everything to do with faulty technology. A Twitter user named Sos Sosowski needed to expand his Switch’s meager storage, and fished around for a solution. He found an old microSD card he had around, and for some reason the Switch wasn’t reading it. When he went to remove the card from the device, it was so hot it burned his finger.

Upon removing the card, he realized the microSD card had melted to the point of displacing the sticker and sporting his fingerprint in the plastic. Obviously, the Internet immediately rushed to the “Nintendo Switch melts microSD cards” headlines, as well as the “obviously this microSD card is a counterfeit” defense.

Turns out, neither is the case. After realizing the storm caused by his Tweet, Sosowski went back to the Internet to clarify the situation. MicroSD cards can be fragile, and the slightest bit of damage can cause something like, for example, an electrical short. The Switch didn’t have anything to do with the issue, the card was simply malfunctioning or damaged.

So there you have it folks, the Nintendo Switch does not, in fact, melt microSD cards.
