Obsidian’s countdown clock has finally ticked down to zero, revealing the identity of their mysterious Project X. The new game, entitled Project Eternity, is an RPG that Obsidian is funding through Kikstarter. It’s a top-down isometric RPG in the vein of Baldur’s Gate, Icewind Dale, Diablo, and Planescape: Torment.
Project Eternity has currently set one of the biggest goals Kickstarter has ever seen at an asking price of 1.1 million dollars. That’s far larger than most Kickstarter projects and is encroaching on budgets that professionally funded indie titles sometimes work with. That being said, many other Kickstarter projects have exceeded funding of 1.1 million dollars, though their goals were originally set far lower. A simple donation of twenty five dollars will net you a steam copy of the game, though the first 25,000 backers will receive it for a discount of $20.
Details on the story and the gameplay system are still sparse, though we do know that the battles will take place in real time, old school style. We also know that the game will be party-based and that you will be able to create your own character. Obsidian has even posted a map of their brand new fantasy world.
Obsidian has 32 days to raise the $1.1 million. As of today, the third day of the Kickstarter, they have raised $1.4 million dollars. Well, that was easy.
Now it’s all about the stretch goals. Currently, we have received a new playable race, class, and companion for reaching the 1.4 million mark. At 1.6 million, they will port the game to Mac and expand the story. If we manage to get the project up to the $2.2 million mark, the game may actually come to Linux! Gasp!
We will bring you more information on Project Eternity as it becomes available.
