People Don’t Like New Zynga Titles

None

Pretty much anyone with a Facebook account has been bombarded with advertisements from Zynga’s Castleville or Empires and Allies, but the developer’s two latest games have failed to garner the same level of popularity.

Hidden Chronicles, a game about finding, well, hidden things, has a daily average user (DAU) total of about 710,000. And even though this number might seem like a pretty solid user base, Zynga has set the stakes pretty high. For instance, the DAU for Empires and Allies and Castleville was over 5 million within their first twelve days.

Scramble With Friends, Zynga’s iOS-only Boggle ripoff, has been a similar disappointment. It failed to break into the top twenty on the App Store, and hasn’t been gaining any real momentum.

Typically, Zynga titles peak in popularity about three months after the game is released. So, both Hidden Chronicles and Scramble With Friends should see some increase, but considering the developer’s past success, any gains will still be a disappointment. “Assuming Zynga averages a 20% quarterly rate of decline for titles beyond their launch windows in 2012,” said Doug Creutz of Cowen and Company, “the company must add 9-10 million DAUs per quarter from new games just to keep total DAUs constant.”

In other words, if Zynga doesn’t add roughly 9-10 million daily users, the company’s player base will begin to decline. So, unless the company can restructure itself a bit or release several gigantic hits, we might see a decrease in annoying Castleville requests.
