Earlier today, Destructoid released a news report confirming that the PlayStation Home servers are officially offline for good. Sony announced that they were shutting down their virtual hub earlier this year and have finally pulled the plug today.
PlayStation Home was a virtual 3D social gaming platform that originally launched on the PlayStation 3 way back in December of 2008. While the service had potential to grow, Sony never took the time to properly support it and players eventually lost interest in the project.
While this particular venture didn’t work out for them, Sony should still be applauded for trying to tackle something new in the social gaming space. Hopefully if they do try to explore this avenue again they will do a better job of making their service accessible and more appealing for the fans.
