Level-5’s Professor Layton puzzle series has proved quite popular in North America. Thus, the fourth game in the series is being localized for North America despite being on the Nintendo DS, not the 3DS. Professor Layton and the Last Specter is the beginning of a trilogy of prequels, and chronicles how the titular professor met his young apprentice, Luke.
The Last Specter begins with Professor Layton travelling to Luke’s hometown, which is known for a protective spirit that guards the town whenever it is summoned. Unfortunately, the spirit has recently turned malevolent, and the professor teams up with Luke and a former colleague named Emmy Altavia in order to discover what’s behind the specter’s change of heart.
The original game included over 170 puzzles that were solved using the touch screen and stylus on the DS. The Japanese version of the game also included a bonus RPG entitled London Life. As the puzzles in the Layton series often need to be heavily changed for localization, the English version of the game may have a different number of puzzles and may not contain London Life.
Professor Layton and the Last Specter will be the final Professor Layton game on the Nintendo DS and will be coming to North America this fall.
