RUMOR: 2012 Release Date For Motion-Controlled PS4?

RUMOR: 2012 Release Date For Motion-Controlled PS4?

None

A Taiwanese company has recently reported that it has received manufacturing orders for PlayStation 4 consoles, and they expect to fulfill those orders by mid-2012 for a fall release. This is very interesting news indeed, especially since that would put Sony on track for two console releases within 12 months, and would also put them head-to-head with Nintendo’s Wii U. It also seems quite unlikely, as Sony has not even hinted at plans for a new console. Still, the fact that the PlayStation 3 went head-to-head with the Wii at launch does lend some credence to this rumor.

However, this earlier-than-expected release date isn’t even the most interesting part of the rumor.

According to the manufacturer, the PlayStation 4 will ship with an onboard camera-based motion control system similar to Microsoft’s Kinect. Will the PlayStation 4 see the return of the EyeToy functionality? It would be an odd move, especially since the Move wand has been so integral to Sony’s motion control strategy for the PlayStation 3. Still, it’s hard to ignore the rumor mill, especially in regards to Sony. After all, both the PS Vita and the PSP Go all started out as rumors and became fact mere weeks later.
