RUMOR: The Wii U Is Also An E-Reader?

None

There’s a chance that gamers who pick up a Wii U this year will be able to use the device to read the latest edition of Tiger Beat magazine, or to polish off their favorite James Joyce novel. Rumor has it that Nintendo is thinking about adding an e-reader to the Wii U’s list of functions.

Entertainment website Forget The Box reportedly got a little inside information from a software developer in Los Angeles who claims to be a part of a team that is porting iOS software over to the Wii U platform. One of the apps that they have been working on would allow the device to download and read books, magazines, newspapers, and comics.

If this rumor is true, I can’t decide if Nintendo is crazy or brilliant. This functionality doesn’t exactly jive with their core demographic, but adding an e-reader to their touchscreen console would allow gamers to access strategy guides at the exact moment that they need it. Stuck in a dungeon while rescuing Zelda? The Wii U has you covered.

Nintendo is also planning to include digital instruction booklets for games that have been downloaded, which is a neat little perk, but I’m not sure it’s necessary.

Obviously, none of this has been confirmed and Nintendo is a notoriously wily company, but adding an e-reader to the Wii U could be a nice way to set it apart from the competition while giving gamers something completely unexpected.
