Ryan Payton Leaves Halo Behind

Ryan Payton Leaves Halo Behind

None

Ryan Payton is a former creative director over a 343 industries, the people behind Halo 4. He recently left the studio, explaining to Kotaku, “I had a great run at Microsoft. I don’t regret one day of it, but after a few years there came a point where I wasn’t creatively excited about the project anymore.”

To clarify, he wasn’t smack talking Halo 4 or anything; it just takes quite a bit to keep a creative director interested in a gaming project. Many franchise fans just want more of the same, while creative directors want to innovate and change. Payton said “The Halo I wanted to build was fundamentally different and I don’t think I had built enough credibility to see such a crazy endeavor through.”

Payton has recently started up his own studio, Camouflaj, and is working on two new titles. He says he wants to create a game that “one billion people play at once” that “hits them harder than a great book or film.” It’s quite an ambitious goal, and we hope he succeeds in it.
