Silicon Knights Hit By Full Force Of U.S. Court

Hopefully, you aren’t a huge Silicon Knights fan.

Following a court ruling in the extremely long legal battle between Too Human and X-Men: Destiny developer Silicon Knights and Unreal Engine 3 creator Epic Games, the former has been ordered to recall and destroy all unsold copies of any of their games that have used the Unreal Engine 3 by December 10. Additionally, they are being required to pay over $9 million to Epic Games and immediately remove all traces of the engine from their own.

This has been a long and arduous path of suits and countersuits, with Epic claiming that Silicon Knights had used their proprietary Unreal Engine 3 technology without licensing it while Silicon Knights had accused Epic of not providing the promised engine and tools to them during development.

Silicon Knights’ punishment, though, is absolutely devastating. All of their recalls must be conducted at their own expense, in addition to the money they must pay directly to Epic. Considering how few commercial successes the developer has seen, this could prove to be an extremely bitter day for the company and its employees.
