Sony Reports $312 Million Loss For Q1 2012

Japanese multimedia giant Sony has, like many multimedia companies as of late, recently fallen on some hard times. Unfortunately for the PlayStation pushers, those bad days don’t appear to be ending anytime soon, as the company has reported a $312 million loss for the year’s first quarter ended June 30.

Despite bringing in $19.2 billion in total sales during the period, losses were near universal across all fronts, with only its camera and music divisions bringing in any sort of profit for the company.

As far as gaming goes, results were not so hot, with the company reporting a $45 million loss from the division alone last quarter. Gaming sales decreased 14.5% from this point last year, primarily due to falling sales of the PlayStation 3 and the PlayStation Portable. As expected, the struggling PlayStation Vita was unable to make up for these declines.

As a result of these hardships, Sony has decreased its outlook for the rest of the fiscal year, citing a “severe operating environment,” “uncertain foreign exchange rates,” and downward “trends in the global economy.”
