Sony Reports Huge Profits From PS4, Software

Sony’s Q1 financial results are in, and the PS4 is almost solely responsible for its major profits. Overall, Sony’s year-over-year profits saw a 42% decline due to the less-than-stellar performance of Sony Pictures and Japan’s recent earthquake disaster, which in turn led to the closing of a lucrative image sensor plant. Things aren’t looking too bad, though. Sony’s smartphone division has been cut down to size and is finally seeing profits, while the “Game & Network Services” division saw huge gains and profits.

Operating profits were reported to be roughly $546 million, and $427 million of that is coming from the Game & Network Services division. Sony reported that those numbers are a result of “…a significant increase in PS4 software sales, including sales through the [PlayStation] network.” Sony sold about 3.5 million PS4s during the quarter, bringing lifetime sales to around 43.5 million units. Currently, Sony is projecting to sell an additional 20 million PS4s before the end of the financial year.
