Sony’s NGP Gets Nerfed?

Sony’s NGP Gets Nerfed?

None

Lately, we’ve been so distracted by our skepticism about Nintendo’s Project Café that we forgot to be skeptical about Sony’s NGP. New information on Sony’s portable device shows just how foolish we’ve been.

Supposedly, Sony’s Next Generation Portable’s specs have been seriously reduced. Originally, the unit was planned to ship with 512MB of RAM, and now it will only ship with 256MB. In addition, the 16 GB internal memory has been taken out. Instead, the device will function entirely on external storage cards, much in the same way the PSP did.

Most of the device’s remaining specs are staying the same. It will still be touch capable, it will still include a GPS and 3G internet, and it will still have a whopping 128 MB of graphics memory, so games will still look unfathomably pretty on the device.

Rumor has it that Sony is doing this in order to chop down the price of the unit. Supposedly, game performance won’t take that much of a hit at a lower RAM point, and the reliance on external memory allows the NGP to be priced similarly to the Nintendo 3DS at $250 dollars. It looks like Sony has finally learned their lesson after the $599 PS3 screw up. Gamers just don’t have $599 to spend these days.
