In an interview with The Financial Times, Square Enix CEO Yoichi Wada explains their decision to continue their popular Dragon Quest franchise on the Nintendo DS instead of on a next-gen system as expected.  Wada stated that putting the series on the DS should attract new fans to the series as well as reach a broader a market.  In a surprising criticism of the PS3 and Xbox 360, Wada went further to tell why he believed it wasn’t viable to place the game on a next-gen system yet.

While describing the next-gen consoles, Wada called them “over-engineered” and didn’t feel like it would be a good move to place the Dragon Quest series on either console at this time.

“There are too many specs – and you also need a high-definition TV, a broadband connection, and a deep knowledge of gaming – these consoles are mismatched to today’s environment. In a year or two years, they will fare better,” he stated.
