On the day of Duke Nukem Forever’s fabled launch, Steam has unveiled an alternative surprise for those whose interested are somewhat more… Frugal. While Steam has carried demos in the past, and even free trials of MMORPGs, the service now hosts a small selection of free-to-play online, multiplayer games. The initial five titles are:  More are sure to follow, particularly from Perfect World Entertainment’s extensive free-to-play library and, with any luck, Turbine will jump on board as well. In the meantime, the current selection covers most bases, including a fast paced first person shooter and super hero MMO in addition to more traditional fantasy and science fiction fare. Unfortunately for Apple gamers, the selection is much more limited, with only Spiral Knights featuring compatibility with Mac OS. All five initial titles in Steam’s free-to-play library are available for download immediately. |
