Steve Jobs Dies At 56

None

Flags are reportedly flying at half-staff today on Apple’s Cupertino campus in Silicon Valley. And unless you’ve had the volume on your iPod turned up far too loud for the last 12 hours, you undoubtedly know why; Steve Jobs passed away last night.

It’s difficult to measure the effect that Jobs has personally had on the computing industry, but it’s probably safe to say that his influence will be felt for decades to come. Very few people actually get the chance to change the world, but Jobs was obviously one of those people. His interests became our interests. His obsessions became our obsessions.

In 2005, the Apple founder gave a commencement address at Stanford University in which he communicated his somewhat optimistic perspective on death: “No one wants to die. Even people who want to go to heaven don’t want to die to get there. And yet death is the destination we all share. No one has ever escaped it. And that is as it should be, because Death is very likely the single best invention of Life. It is Life’s change agent. It clears out the old to make way for the new. Right now the new is you, but someday not too long from now, you will gradually become the old and be cleared away. Sorry to be so dramatic, but it is quite true.”

At the end of his speech he added “Stay hungry, stay foolish.” I’m not actually sure if this is good advice or terrible advice, but in the wake of his death, it certainly is inspiring.
