Streets Of Rage Might Make A Comeback

Backbone Entertainment has become one of the key names in porting classic games, particularly beat’em ups, to the digital realm. That isn’t to say, though, that they don’t have more in-depth development experience; the development studio was also behind the HD remakes of Super Street Fighter II Turbo and Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo, as well as Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection.

But now they want to make a new Streets of Rage game.

Streets of Rage was a Sega Master System/Sega Genesis trilogy of beat’em ups in the vein of Final Fight. Streets of Rage 2, in particular, stands the test of time as one of the best side-scrolling beat’em ups of all time, with terrific level design that mixes great background artwork with both horizontal and vertical scrolling, as well as smooth and responsive controls.

Backbone has already pitched the game to Sega, along with some concept art. In addition, they also pitched a reboot of ESWAT, one of the more oddball, yet entertaining, games in the Genesis library (and a notably included on Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection).
